|
6 - Day 320
|
7 - Day 321
Cassie is developing an udder. No where near foal
ready, but starting.
|
8 - Day 322
Udder grew a bit more today. Cassie is very
wide. Starting to soften by tail head.
|
9 - Day 323
Udder continues to develop. Hindquarters are
starting to drop off.
|
10 - Day 324
Very odd behavior...it's almost like she understands
that Annie is about to foal. Much udder change today. Cassie's
last foal was at 320 days, so she could go anytime although she doesn't
look quite ready.
|
11 - Day 325
Calcium tests at about 50 PPM - typically we'll see a
foal within 10 days of reaching 50 PPM. Milk is yellow, and somewhat
thick & sticky. No salt. Cassie is very saggy under the tail.
She usually waxes several days before foaling and drips milk a day or two
before. |
12 - Day 326
Calcium still about 50 PPM . Appetite
good...but then Cassie seldom lets much interfere with her meals!
Cassie carries her foals high & wide so she usually doesn't develop
the real pendulous belly that our TB mares do.
|
13 - Day 327
Calcium still about 50 PPM . Cassie is
slowing down now, she's typically quite active & animated. Not
so now. Udder continues to develop, not foal ready yet. Milk
still quite yellow, but becoming cloudy.
|
14 - Day 328
No change to udder or milk. Cassie probably won't
change much from here until she waxes. She's softened enough in the
back (which she generally does early)
|
15 - Day 329
No change to udder or milk. Belly has changed
shape today...she's deeper and wider toward the back. Appetite
continues good, mood fine.
|
16 - Day 330
No change to udder or milk. Cassie's hind quarters
have dramatically dropped off...as the photo shows. Her mood and
appetite are fine. Cassie seldom shows any significant discomfort
during late pregnancy.
|
17 - Day 331
No change to udder. Cassie is very swollen and
relaxed under the tail...looks like she's closer than her udder says she
is. We'll be keeping a close eye on her from here on...although it's
not yet time to get up through the night to check on her!.
|
18 - Day 332
Udder increased in size today. Starting to get
some filling of the teats. Calcium levels at about 75 PPM.
Milk is yellow, becoming cloudy and thicker, although it doesn't yet milk
really easily. Looks like the last week of pregnancy.
|
19 - Day 333
Calcium is at a little over 100 PPM.
Cassie's udder is full, coming up between her legs in the back.
Cassie is acting odd, standing funny. Milk has turned mostly white,
almost opaque. Looks almost foal-ready. No wax yet. Perhaps an Easter
foal?
|
20
- Day 334
Happy Easter!
No change to calcium level. Milk is quite white, more
plentiful, fairly thick and sticky. A small amount of wax this
morning. Mood fine, appetite good, however, it's clear that Cassie
is nearing foaling.
|
21
- Day 335
Significant udder development today. Milk is
completely white, and looks "foal ready." Calcium level
remains unchanged, however, so it's a question mark. Typically,
bright white, opaque milk means the foal is coming VERY soon. Cassie
must not share that opinion... |
22
- Day 336
No change whatsoever. Udder full and tight.
Milk bright white and plentiful, calcium unchanged. Cassie's mood is
particularly evil, so perhaps she's getting ready (or not!) No
dripping of milk, which Cassie usually does.
|
23
- Day 337
Milk even more plentiful. Very white, very thick,
opaque. Looks foal ready. Calcium around 125. Milk LOOKS
ready, but calcium test says "not tonight." Cassie isn't
really acting like a mare on the edge of foaling...she's just not odd
enough. She is more interested in the foals in the barn. |
24
- Day 338
Lots of milk, udder is VERY large now. Milk white,
opaque, thick. Calcium at almost 200 PPM. She's behaving very
odd...doing her version of a hula dance...swaying her hindquarters around,
while tossing her head. While it's comical, we don't dare
laugh...lest we make her really mad! |
25
- Day 339
Lots of milk, turned to a cream-color. Very
thick and sticky. Milks very easily. She's more restless
tonight, we'll monitor through the night.
|
26
- Day 340
Lots of milk, flows easily. Waxed off and on all
day. Restless and moody. No signs left to watch for...except
our favorite:
"a nose at both ends"
|
27
- Day 341
Photo shows how her hindquarters have really dropped
off. She was turned out next to Norton today, she flirted
mercilessly with him. When she came in, she fought with Sophie, then
grabbed the bars of the stall front with her teeth and shook it.
This is one bizarre mare tonight! |
28
- Day 342
PM Update: Still Mean! Teats full and
distended. Looks like little cones stuck on her udder.
Squirting milk. Clear discharge started this afternoon, not sure
what it is. Cassie could not possibly look any more ready.
|
29
- Day 343
PM Update: Hard to believe, but no foal
yet! She's streaming milk and tonight is having contractions that we
can see on her belly and it causes milk to squirt. She isn't letting
this slow down her eating, however! We've given up trying to guess
about Cassie's foaling.... |
